Antique Caucasian rugs are hand-knotted wool textiles produced in the Caucasus region, historically encompassing areas between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Known for their bold geometric patterns and vibrant natural dyes, these carpets were traditionally woven by various tribal groups in villages such as Shirvan, Kuba, and Kazak.

These rugs are traditionally constructed using hand-spun wool for the pile, warp, and weft, utilising the symmetric or asymmetric knot. Natural dyes derived from plants, insects, and minerals provide the rich colour palette, often featuring deep indigos, madder reds, and soft yellows that age gracefully over time.

Authenticity is identified through examining the handle, knot density, natural dye variations, and wool quality. Genuine pieces typically display abrashsubtle tonal variations in the wool caused by batch-dying yarnalong with characteristic tribal motifs, hand-finished sides, and organic wear consistent with age.

An antique tribal rug functions effectively as a focal point in contemporary spaces, grounding neutral furniture with its rich colour and geometric complexity. It can be layered over larger natural fibre flooring or placed as a standalone piece in studies, hallways, or living rooms to add historical texture.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional specialised cleaning when necessary, and keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent fading. Using a breathable underlay protects the wool pile from friction and extends the lifespan of the antique structure.
