The Earring Curator has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
The lid of the box is marked "A present from The Shipperies, Liverpool 1886". The Shipperies was a Liverpool pub established in 1886 and believed to have been built as a lodging house for visitors to the neighbouring Shipperies International Exhibition of Navigation, Travelling, Commerce and Manufacture that same year. A little piece of history!
The silver has a wonderful patina, you could polish it to a higher shine if you prefer but this kind of finish only comes once in a lifetime.
