Khamseh carpets are woven by a confederation of five nomadic and sedentary tribes in the Fars province of south-west Persia, traditionally recognised by distinctive geometric designs and dark indigo or madder red fields.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed with hand-spun wool piles on cotton or wool foundations, coloured using natural vegetable dyes such as madder root, indigo, and weld.

Key indicators include irregularities in the weave and symmetry, natural colour variations known as abrash, hand-spun wool with a lanolin-rich handle, and traditional tribal motifs rather than standardized workshop designs.

An antique tribal carpet adds warmth and texture to modern schemes, anchoring minimalist furniture or complementing eclectic spaces when paired with neutral upholstery and natural woods.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without the beater bar, professional organic washing every few years, protection from direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, and the use of a breathable underlay.
