FAQs

Introduced around 1816 by Josiah Spode II, the Italian pattern features an underglaze blue print combining classical Italianate ruins with an oriental-inspired Imari border. It became one of the most continuously manufactured tableware designs produced in Staffordshire, England.

These plates were manufactured using earthenware coated with a white glaze. The blue design was transferred onto the unglazed or biscuit-fired ceramic body from copper-plate engravings using cobalt oxide ink before a final transparent glazing process.

Early pieces typically feature impressed or printed Spode makers marks on the underside, a translucent glaze with subtle bluish pooling around the foot rim, and finely detailed engraving lines characteristic of early cobalt transfer printing.
