The Silver Squirrel has dated this piece to the Edwardian era.
Their is a slight push to the central area of the back (see final photo) and it doesn't spring open, i.e. it has to be manually opened once the button has been depressed. It measures approx. 1.25 inches (3.2cm) excluding the loop and weighs 18 grams. A very nice example.
