A extremely rare Victorian horse hoof students oil lamp dating from the late 19th century with sliding rise and fall lighting assembly.
This heavily silver plated lamp was made by the well respected London based Victorian taxidermist Roland Ward and was most likely mounted onto the hoof of a favourite and much loved horse as a momento.
The lamp is engraved ‘Roland Ward & Co Naturalists 166 Piccadilly W.’ on the top of the lamp base and ‘Ward & Co 166 Piccadilly Naturalists’ on the underside of the silver plated horse shoe.
The lamp shade is most probably a old replacement.
