Victorian Silver Claret Jug / Wine Ewer 1859

19th century
Description

This superb hallmarked VICTORIAN STERLING SILVER CLARET JUG / WINE EWER was made by Martin Hall & Co and assayed in Sheffield in 1859.

Of classic baluster form, the main body is very finely engraved with a seated classical-style male figure holding a cleaver-type instrument aloft above a large vacant cartouche. The elaborate foliate engraving has various fruits within and two opposing birds amongst flanking branches.

The spreading circular foot is similarly engraved as is the elongated swan-neck-style handle which is complete with bone insulators. The hinged lid has a cast finial modeled as oak leaves and acorn husks above a single leaf and lifts to reveal the original vibrant gilt interior.

This fabulous high quality Solid Silver Claret / Wine Jug is free from any added engravings, monograms etc., is in superb condition despite being over 160 years old and would look stunning in any setting.
