Ersari carpets are woven by the Ersari tribe, one of the major Turkmen groups of Central Asia. They are traditionally recognised by their distinctive use of guls (octagonal motifs), a generally more relaxed or open design layout compared to other Turkmen tribes, and a warm palette dominated by madder red.

These carpets are typically crafted entirely from sheeps wool, utilised for the foundation warps, wefts, and the hand-knotted pile. Natural dyes derived from plants, roots, and insectssuch as madder for redswere traditionally employed to achieve rich, enduring colours.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the handle, knot density, natural dye variations (abrash), and hand-spun wool characteristics. Genuine pieces from this period exhibit characteristic wear patterns, organic irregularities in the motifs, and authentic wool or cotton foundation fringes.

An antique tribal carpet works effectively as a grounding anchor in both contemporary and traditional spaces. Pairing the piece with neutral furnishings and modern upholstery allows the rich hues and geometric motifs to serve as a focal point without overwhelming the room.

Preservation requires regular, gentle vacuuming without a rotating beater bar to protect the pile. Professional cleaning by a specialist in antique textiles is recommended every few years, alongside avoiding direct, prolonged exposure to sunlight to prevent dye fading.
