Opus Antiques has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
They were also used as desk items, where the lit match would be used to light a wax seal stick for sealing letters.
On the underside of the base there would have been striker paper to light the match.
A lovely piece with great figuring, colour and unusual size. It measures 10cm h including the boss x 5.6cm w.
