The Vintage Wrist Watch Company has dated this piece to the 1890s.
The overall dimensions are 50 x 55 x 15mm deep so a good substantial piece. The top section comprises a vesta which is hallmarked underneath the edge of the hinged lid for Birmingham 1897 with a maker’s mark of JH, it is difficult to identify the maker as many Birmingham silversmiths registered similar marks.
Both the discs and the surrounds have silver marks, as does the inside of the cover.

The front of the vesta has the initials of a previous owner, CHL.
The vesta is in lovely condition, just a slight hint of unevenness but nothing too serious at all.
The vesta comes in a new presentation box.
