Very Rare Sheffield 1903 Solid Silver Set of 6 Individual Asparagus Holders in the Original Fitted Case.

1900 - 1920
Description

Outstanding rare to find Sheffield 1903 English hallmarked solid silver set of 6 individual asparagus holders or tongs made by George Howson of the well known 19th century firm of Harrison Brothers and Howson, and retailed by very famous retailers The Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company of Regent Street in London, silver makers to the King. Harrison Brothers and Howson are still trading in silver today.

These holders are fitted into the original gilt embellished shaped case having a gorgeous deep turquoise blue silk and velvet interior, which also bears the retailers label.

In the Victorian and early Edwardian era, such holders were meant to be used at place settings by each diner, to hold one stalk of asparagus, while pieces were bitten off to eat. Although it was considered good manners to also use fingers for holding, many people were uncomfortable with that, and so preferred to use holders. Cutting the stalks with knife and fork would crush the precious asparagus, hence the holders. Several asparagus would be transferred to the plate via larger master asparagus servers (see listings for those available for sale).

The elegant double struck foliate, shell and feathered edge design of the stems combines with the curved and shaped blades to make a lovely presentation.

Size-3.5 inches long by 1 5/8 inches wide each. Case size-6.5 inches by 4.5 inches by 1 7/8 inches.

Weight-silver 150 grams, or 285 grams including case.

A very unusual set for the silver collector, as well as a functional set that can still be used for its original purpose or for serving other food items, such as canapés, sandwiches, or cakes.

In very good condition, it is very rare to find such a set, and particularly complete with its original case.
