A fireback is a heavy iron plate positioned against the rear wall of an open fireplace to shield the masonry from heat damage. It absorbs thermal energy from the flames and radiates heat back into the room, improving heating efficiency.

Georgian firebacks were made using sand casting techniques, where molten iron was poured into sand moulds impressed with hand-carved wooden patterns. This method produced dense iron plates with raised relief designs and textured surfaces.

Authentic period firebacks display uneven plate thickness, sand-grain texture on the reverse, and subtle surface pitting caused by historical heat exposure. Modern reproductions often show uniform thickness and smoother, less defined relief details.

A fireback can be installed inside an active fireplace or wood burner recess to protect brickwork. Alternatively, it can be mounted as wall art in a hallway, kitchen, or garden wall as an architectural feature.
