Imari ware is a type of Japanese export porcelain produced in the town of Arita, taking its name from the port of shipment. The style gained prominence during the Edo period in the late 17th century, specifically through trade with European merchants via the Dutch East India Company.

Imari pieces are crafted from fine-grained white porcelain clay, shaped on a potters wheel, and fired at high temperatures. The distinct palette traditionally relies on underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red, complemented by delicate highlights in gold leaf.

Authentic antique pieces display hand-painted brushwork with slight irregularities, minor surface wear consistent with age, and characteristic iron-spotting within the unglazed foot rim. The glaze often exhibits a soft sheen rather than a uniform modern gloss, and older items frequently feature underglaze blue cobalt markings.

A large decorative charger can be mounted on a wall using a specialized plate hanger to serve as a focal point, or displayed upright on a sideboard using a sturdy metal stand. Pairing the piece with neutral backgrounds allows the intricate cobalt and red palette to stand out without visual clutter.

Antique ceramics should be cleaned exclusively by hand using lukewarm water and a mild, non-abrasive detergent, avoiding harsh scrubbing or ultrasonic cleaners. Items must never be placed in a dishwasher, and displaying them away from direct sunlight prevents fading of overglaze enamels and gilding.
