FAQs

Portrait miniatures are small-scale paintings, typically executed on vellum, card, or ivory during the 16th to 19th centuries, often housed in protective cases or frames for personal wear or keeping.

Traditional materials include watercolour or gouache on vellum, treated paper, card, thin ivory sheets, and metals such as brass, silver, or gold for the surrounding frames and cases.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit fine stippling or hatching under magnification, handmade paper or genuine thin ivory substrates, period-appropriate framing techniques, and signs of age such as slight pigment oxidisation.

These small-scale works are well-suited for gallery walls mixed with modern frames, displayed on dedicated plate stands on bookshelves, or hung in narrow wall spaces to create intimate focal points.

To prevent fading and degradation of the delicate pigments and paper, miniatures must be kept away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and extreme temperature fluctuations, ideally behind UV-filtering glass.
