How do I date a dressing mirror?

Dating relies upon examining the timber grain, construction techniques like dovetailing, and the bevelling style of the glass plate. Georgian and Victorian pieces show distinct hand-tool marks and specific cabinet-making proportions. Hardware such as brass screw caps and hinges also provides chronological clues. Earlier frames use handmade brass fittings while later twentieth-century pieces feature machine-tooled elements.

Are swing mirrors stable on tables?

Original swing mirrors rely on weighted wooden bases or bracket feet to counterbalance the tilting frame. Properly adjusted side tension screws keep the glass fixed at the desired angle. Placement on a level surface ensures the upright pillars remain upright. The structural integrity of the tenon joints connecting the frame to the base dictates overall stability.

Can I replace an old mirror glass?

Replacing original glass is possible, though collectors generally prefer retaining the original plate even when foxing or silver degradation is present. The original glass confirms the age and authenticity of the piece. If replacement is necessary for functional use, modern silvered glass can be cut to fit the rebate of the antique wooden frame.

What is the difference between vanity and cheval mirrors?

Vanity mirrors are scaled for placement on dressing tables, chests of drawers, or vanity desks. They focus on upper-body reflection for personal grooming and cosmetic application. Cheval mirrors stand independently on the floor and offer a full-length view. They utilise a heavy frame and floor-standing legs rather than sitting on furniture.
