How do I hang a heavy overmantel mirror?

Heavy carved wood and gesso mirrors require secure anchoring into wall studs using robust fixings rated for substantial weights. Professional installation ensures the frame remains stable against the wall. Position the mirror at a height that reflects eye level or catches light from nearby windows to maximise its impact in the room.

Can I clean the gold leaf on an antique frame?

Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry brush to remove particles without disturbing the delicate metallic leaf. Avoid liquid cleaners and modern chemicals which strip historical finishes. Consult a conservator if the gilding shows flaking or active deterioration to preserve the integrity of the wood and gesso underneath.

How do I identify a Victorian gilded frame?

Victorian frames often display heavier cast gesso ornamentation, deeper moulding profiles, and distinctive dark red bole showing beneath worn gold leaf. They frequently house oil paintings on canvas or board from the nineteenth century. Compare the corner joins and backing boards to establish whether the frame and its artwork or mirror plate have remained together since manufacture.
