Description

Joshaghan is a town in Central Persia where carpets have been woven since at least the 18th century. More recently, their rugs have been known for the fine hand-spun Kurk wool that they use and for the ubiquitous repeat shrub design, as in our piece. It is indeed very nicely woven with fine wool and natural dyes. The classic design has the nice variation of not having a central medallion. Although there is plenty of variation and complexity in the shrubs, there also appears to be an order to the design. Is there a cosmic message there? Who knows, but this is a very elegant and decorative rug which would work in many settings. It has survived the generations in excellent condition, and has recently been professionally cleaned.

Joshaghan rugs originate from central Persia and are historically recognised for their distinctive geometric lattice patterns, often featuring repeating garden motifs executed in rich reds and deep indigos.

These carpets are traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for the pile and foundation, dyed with natural vegetable colorants such as madder root and indigo.

Authenticity is determined by examining the knot density on the reverse, the presence of natural dye variations or abrashe, hand-spun wool characteristics, and the type of wool fringe integration.

Pairing an antique rug with contemporary furnishings creates a balanced aesthetic, grounding minimalist spaces with warmth, texture, and historical narrative.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without beater bars, professional hand washing when necessary, and keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fading.
