Qashqai 'lion' Kilim, South Persia Circa 1900, 1.16m X 1.96m

£1,950    $2,613    €2,284
The lion is a powerful symbol in Persian history and culture. It has been the emblem of the ancient Persian empires and also of the modern Iranian state. Lions also appear on the architectural Achaemenid ruins at Persepolis in South Persia, close to the migration routes of the Qashaqi tribes, and appear in various forms in Qashqai weavings. This wonderful kilim is a testament to the connection the Qashqai weavers have with the ''Lion'' symbol. The image stands alone in the field with nothing to distract us from its power and majesty. Interestingly, the drawing is quite whimsical. It appears to have the form of a lioness, but the markings of a leopard. Either way, it is a potent symbol of tribal pride and protection. Note the the beautifully drawn main border, supplemented by chevron-style elems at the long ends. Finely woven with natural dyes as well as undyed wools and in a very useful size. Generally very good condition. This rare piece is both collectible and decorative.
