Matched Pair of Irish Mahogany Dressing Tables

19th century
For Sale by Baggott & Co.
Description

Matched Pair of Irish Mahogany Dressing Tables

They are a matched pair made from slightly different timbers, one table has slight variation in the scale of the mouldings on the legs, I suggest one was made to match the other. Both with polished mahogany tops and shaped up-stand (one is 1.5cm higher than the other), a single frieze drawer, the legs are heightened in gilt. Although when viewed side by side the slight variations in design is apparent, but if placed either side of a bed, hall or mantelpiece the variation would be indiscernible. Both tables bear the same mark to the back, Williams and Gibton, Dublin.

Irish, circa 1840

These 19th-century Irish Regency dressing tables come as a matched pair made from rich brown mahogany. Each piece displays a polished top with a shaped up-stand gallery, a single frieze drawer fitted with a central wooden knob, turned legs heightened in gilt, and scroll feet resting above brass-collared stretchers. The timber surfaces show visible grain variations, and the two tables vary slightly in moulding scale and gallery height, with one measuring 1.5 cm taller than the other. Both examples measure 89 cm high, 122 cm wide, and 58 cm deep overall, and bear the Williams and Gibton, Dublin mark to the back. Positioned on either side of a bed in a principal bedroom, or placed symmetrically on opposite sides of a hallway or mantelpiece, the tables provide functional surface space for daily grooming or display. Their grand Regency design suits traditional bedroom schemes or formal reception rooms, allowing the pair to balance a room visually while offering practical storage within their frieze drawers.

19th-century Irish mahogany furniture often features defined proportions, dense timber, and distinctive architectural details such as raised gallery tops and turned legs with brass embellishments.

These tables were typically crafted from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over secondary softwoods, featuring hand-dovetailed drawer joints, turned handles, and cast brass accents.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of hand-planing, original mortise and tenon joinery, natural patination on the underside, and hand-cut dovetailed construction inside the frieze drawers.

A matched pair functions effectively as oversized bedside tables positioned on either side of a bed, or arranged symmetrically as console tables along a hallway.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish annually, avoiding direct sunlight and artificial heat sources.
