Description

This salt-bag ('namakdan' in Persian) has a very unusual design - certainly not one I have seen before! Two ivory birds-heads lozenges can be seen in the lower madder-red ground with what appear to be three stylised 'trees-of-life' above and one tree in the neck of the bag. The main border is in an attractive shade of golden-yellow which contains a continuous vine, symbolising the eternal cycle of life.

The back is more typical of Shahsevan weavings having narrow horizontal bands of different colours.

Made by Shahsevan tribes in the Varamin region of north-central Persia circa 1900.

Was £850 now £700.

Size: 46cm x 35cm (1' 6" x 1' 2").

The Shahsevan are a confederation of nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes residing primarily in north-west Persia and the Caucasus, renowned for their fine pile and flatwoven salt bags, horse covers, and storage trappings featuring geometric motifs and rich natural dyes.

These utilitarian objects were traditionally constructed using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation, often employing asymmetrical or symmetrical knots, sometimes combined with supplementary weft-float brocading or flatweave techniques, coloured with natural vegetable and insect dyes.

Authentic pieces display characteristic wool quality with natural lanolin retention, consistent hand-spun irregularities, authentic vegetable dye palettes showing subtle abrash, and traditional tribal iconography specific to the region of origin.

These versatile textile pieces can be mounted as wall art in a shadow box, displayed flat on a surface as a small accent mat, or integrated into a curated gallery wall alongside other historical artefacts.

Preservation requires keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, avoiding excessive moisture, and occasionally vacuuming gently through a mesh screen using low suction to remove dust without damaging the wool fibres.
