FAQs

A Wellington chest is a tall, narrow set of drawers traditionally featuring a hinged locking side stile that secures all the drawers at once. Originating in the early 19th century, this design was purportedly named after the Duke of Wellington.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid timber frames veneered in figured hardwoods such as walnut or mahogany. Traditional construction methods involve hand-cut dovetail joints for the drawers and brass hardware fixtures.

Authentic pieces from the 19th century exhibit period-appropriate construction, such as hand-cut dovetailing, timber shrinkage consistent with age, traditional hand-applied finishes, and original locking mechanisms with functional side stiles.

Due to its narrow footprint and vertical orientation, this type of cabinet functions effectively in compact spaces or studies, where it can provide storage while serving as a focal point paired with contemporary minimalist decor.

Preserve antique walnut by keeping it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent veneer cracking. Maintain the wood using microcrystalline wax periodically, avoiding silicone-based polishes and excessive moisture.
