This compact Georgian bureau desk dates from the period around 1720 and takes the form of an English Country House slant-front writing cabinet made from walnut, oak, and brass. The rich warm brown timber displays distinct burr walnut figuring on the sloping fall-front lid and drawer fronts, accented by a crossbanded border and polished brass drop handles with batwing backplates. The front incorporates a configuration of two smaller upper drawers over three graduated full-width lower drawers, supported underneath by shaped bracket feet. Measuring 97 cm high, 68 cm wide, and 53.5 cm deep, the piece functions practically as a dedicated writing station or a versatile storage cabinet. Positioned in a study, home office, or living room, the bureau provides a practical writing surface that folds down to reveal a fitted interior complete with a candle slide and well. The traditional proportions and compact footprint allow it to sit comfortably against a wall in smaller spaces while adding period character to domestic interior schemes. The visible materials and hardware reflect traditional cabinet-making methods of the early eighteenth century, creating a functional furnishing with historical appeal.

Originating in 18th-century Britain, a Georgian walnut bureau features a sloping fall-front writing surface supported by lopers, opening to reveal internal compartments and drawers set above a chest of drawers.

These pieces typically feature figured walnut veneers laid over an oak or pine carcass, with hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, pierced brass handles, and decorative featherbanded or crossbanded borders.

Authentic 18th-century bureaus exhibit hand-sawn wood markings, hand-carved dovetail joints, original iron lock mechanisms, natural wood shrinkage on drawer bases, and age-related patination on the veneer.

Position the bureau as a functional focal point in a hallway, home office, or living room, complementing its warm wood tones with modern artwork, brass table lamps, and neutral upholstery.

Position the furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage or fading, dust with a soft cloth, and apply a natural beeswax polish annually to protect the surface finish.
