American Impressionism, emerging in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, is characterised by visible brushstrokes, an emphasis on light and its shifting qualities, and everyday subject matters often painted in natural plein-air settings.

These works were traditionally executed using oil paints composed of pigment suspended in drying oils, applied onto stretched woven canvas primed with gesso or lead white grounds, and housed in hand-carved or moulded wooden frames.

Authenticating a painting from this era involves examining canvas weave, stretcher bar construction, pigment composition under ultraviolet light, artist signatures, and provenance documentation backed by expert art historical appraisal.

An antique oil painting can serve as a sophisticated focal point in a modern room, anchored by simple framing and directed picture lighting to highlight its texture and atmospheric palette without overwhelming minimal surroundings.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, keeping the canvas dust-free with a soft brush, and refraining from applying liquid cleaners directly to the paint surface.
