This oil painting on canvas dates from 1940 and belongs to the Realism style, bearing the signature of artist Bernd Funke. The composition displays warm brown tones combined with chiaroscuro lighting, depicting an elderly man with a full beard and visible impasto brushwork. He wears a green Tyrolean hat adorned with a white feather ornament and decorative trim. Measuring 28 cm high and 22 cm wide, the artwork is presented on canvas material. The subject possesses deep facial wrinkles and a contemplative expression directed to the side. The palette centres on earthy browns, muted greens, and warm skin tones against a dark background, showcasing realistic portraiture techniques from the mid-twentieth century. In a contemporary home, this framed piece functions effectively above a sideboard or within a gentleman's library setting to add traditional character to interior spaces.

FAQs

Twentieth-century German portraiture often combines traditional realism with expressive brushwork, capturing regional character, traditional dress, and realistic human features through deep tonal contrast.

Artists typically painted with oil-based pigments bound with linseed or walnut oil, applied onto stretched linen or cotton canvas primed with a gesso ground.

Authentic pieces display natural age craquelure, artist signatures in consistent medium, stretcher key marks on the reverse, and characteristic paint layering techniques of the period.

Character portraits pair well with dark wood furniture, brass accents, and minimalist gallery walls to create contrast between historical artwork and contemporary decor.

Keep the painting away from direct sunlight and humidity fluctuations, dust gently with a soft dry brush, and consult a professional restorer for varnish removal or surface cleaning.
