This post-Impressionism still life oil painting on canvas dates from the 1940 period. Painted with an impasto technique in a gentleman's library style, it utilises a palette of dark green, ochre, and burgundy. The artwork depicts a table setting featuring a tiered fruit stand with a red apple and a large orange, peeled citrus fruit, cut glassware including a glass of dark red wine, and a dark bottle alongside a small blue price ticket or marker. The piece displays visible brushstrokes and thick pigment texture throughout the arrangement. The canvas measures 78 cm high, 88 cm wide, and 9 cm deep, housed in its original pine frame. Suitable for domestic placement above a sideboard in a dining room or living space, the painting brings traditional mid-century character to an interior. The composition captures a rich arrangement of fresh produce and glassware under moody lighting. Buyers receive a classic painted canvas study executed with experienced technique, ready to hang within its period framing.

FAQs

Traditional still life oil paintings focus on arranged inanimate subjects, such as fruit, glassware, and tableware, capturing light, texture, and composition through layered oil pigments on canvas.

Artists traditionally used ground mineral and organic pigments bound in linseed oil, applied with bristle brushes onto hand-stretched linen or cotton canvas supported by wooden stretchers.

Authenticity can be evaluated by inspecting natural surface craquelure, age-appropriate oxidisation on the canvas reverse, original wooden stretcher joints, and consistent brushwork technique.

Position the artwork above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or within a curated gallery wall to add depth, warm colour, and historical narrative to contemporary dining or living spaces.

Keep the painting away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and heat sources, dusting gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush while avoiding chemical liquid cleaners.
