The Soup Tureen, Ca 1940: Large Cubist Abstracted Modernist Interior Painting Oil on Canvas

1920 - 1940
Description

This striking painting depicts a classic early 20th century interior, with a soup tureen on a sideboard that is reflected in the mirror behind it. There is a wonderful juxtaposition between the stillness of the scene and its cubist rendition with dynamic lines and fractured light.

I want to tell you you about the artist who painted it, but let me tell you about the initial owner of the work first: it belonged to the Belgian writer and Goncourt Prize winner Charles Plisnier (1896-1952).

Plisinier was a Communist in his youth and briefly belonged to the Trotskyist movement in the late 1920s. He later disavowed communism and became a Roman Catholic, remaining nevertheless a Marxist. He turned to literature, writing family sagas critical of bourgeois society. Perhaps our painting held a certainly symbolism for him.

It is a work by Brussels-born Charles Herman Hoffman (1900-1973) who came from a family of artists: he was the son of Guillaume-François Hoffman (1863-?), painter and professor of anatomy, and the brother of Lucien Hoffman (1891-1951), sculpture and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels.

Charles Hoffman was a discreet artist who loved producing still lives representing moments snatched from the intimate life of the home. Works by the artist are in the collection of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Brussels.

Our large oil by Hoffman measures 80 x 70 cm and is signed on the verso only, where the artist also noted his address and the inventory/exhibition number "9". The overall framed size is 93 x 83 cm.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-20th-century Cubist still life paintings decompose everyday subject matter into geometric facets, presenting objects like tableware and furniture from multiple perspectives simultaneously within earth-toned colour schemes.

Artists during this period primarily used oil paints on stretched cotton or linen canvas, frequently building up layered impasto textures over charcoal or graphite underdrawings.

Authentic period works typically display age-appropriate canvas weave, subtle surface craquelure, historical framing hardware, and period signatures or inventory markings on the reverse.

Position the artwork central above a sideboard or fireplace mantel, pairing it with streamlined modern ceramics or architectural lighting to complement its structured composition.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight, severe temperature shifts, and humidity, clearing dust gently with a soft, dry natural-bristle brush rather than liquid cleaners.
