Still Life Fruit Oil Painting on Canvas Blue and White Jug Portraits

1940 - 1960
For Sale by Sale Antiques
Description

A stunning Still Life oil on canvas board Painting of mixed assortment of fruit in a dish with a blue and white jug and glass vase within a table setting.

The artist has painted ripe peaches full and sliced, with a small bunch of green seedless grapes , the odd red cherry ,and a walnut cracked open with the shell pieces nearby.

A large leafed plant dresses the scene with the top of a fluted clear glass vase arising within the background, demonstrating the artists immense talent for accurately painting such a varied assortment of fruit.

The whole painting is both sharp and colourful and correctly scaled to look professional in its fine detailed finishing.A beautiful study which would look great within a kitchen setting.

This 1960 oil painting on canvas follows the Dutch Still Life style and depicts a domestic tabletop scene. The composition includes an assortment of ripe peaches, a bunch of green grapes, a cracked walnut, red cherries, and a large autumn leaf beside a ceramic jug and a clear glass vase against a warm brown background. The artwork bears a signature in the lower left corner and is housed within an original wooden gesso and gilt ornate swept frame with a canvas inner slip, featuring moulded decoration and a multi-tiered profile. Measuring 63.5 cm high, 54.5 cm wide, and 5 cm deep, the framed picture fits well above a sideboard or inside a kitchen setting to add a traditional touch to interior decor.

Still life painting is an artistic genre focusing on arranged inanimate subject matter, including fruit, flora, glassware, and domestic vessels. Originating prominently in Western art during the seventeenth century, particularly within Dutch and Flemish traditions, the style emphasises light, shadow, surface texture, and realistic composition.

Traditional oil paintings are executed using oil-based pigments applied to primed linen or cotton canvas stretched over wooden stretcher bars. Frames are frequently constructed from wood with decorative plaster moulding and finished with metallic leaf or paint.

Authentic oil paintings feature physical depth, visible brushstrokes, and natural variations in paint thickness across the surface. Examining the reverse side usually reveals aged woven canvas, wooden stretcher frame joints, and natural oxidisation around metal fixings.

Still life artwork functions effectively as a focal point above a dining room sideboard, kitchen mantelpiece, or integrated into a modern gallery wall. Positioning traditional representational art alongside contemporary furniture creates visual contrast and texture within a room.

Keep canvas paintings positioned away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and direct heat sources to prevent cracking, fading, or canvas warping. Dust the surface gently using a soft, dry brush, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or cloth friction.
