This large Art Deco French sculpture from 1930 depicts a reclining female figure holding a violin, mounted on a polished oval black marble base. The piece is constructed from spelter and ivorine, featuring black drapery with gilt patination and highlights on the garments and base. The detailed carving is evident in the facial features and hands of the figure, complemented by the turned shape of the violin. The sculpture stands 30 cm high, 58 cm wide, and 17 cm deep. In a modern interior, the sculpture suits placement on a sideboard top to display the Art Deco glamour and decorative motifs. The clean lines of the marble base and the contrasting black and gold tones integrate smoothly into formal living spaces or studies as a focal tabletop ornament.

Popularised in France during the 1920s and 1930s, these sculptures combine patinated spelter with ivorine details for facial and body features, capturing the geometric elegance and theatrical themes of the Art Deco era.

Sculptors of this period primarily utilised zinc-based spelter or bronze for painted drapery, alongside celluloid, ivorine, or carved ivory for skin elements, mounted upon solid marble or onyx bases.

Authentic period pieces display high-quality casting details, original layered patination or cold painting, characteristic weight from solid stone bases, and period-typical stylized hair and drapery.

These figurative objects function as focal points when displayed on sideboards, mantelpieces, or wide window sills, contrasting effectively against minimalist backdrops or rich wall colours.

Dust gently with a soft dry microfibre cloth, avoid water or chemical solvents that strip original patination, and display away from direct heat sources to prevent material degradation.
