Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE VICTORIAN ERA:
Cushion-shaped pommels over faceted grips: late 19th-century hearth ironmongery.
Hand-peened brass rivets fixing the scoop: traditional manual metal assembly.
Pierced crown motif on the shovel: fashionable late Victorian fireside ornament.
Dark oxidisation and fine pitting in the recesses: decades of hearth heat and use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Victorian fire tools are functional and decorative hearth accessories produced during the 19th century, designed to manage open solid-fuel fires in period homes.

19th-century hearth tools were commonly forged from solid brass, cast iron, or wrought steel, featuring cast brass handles and heavy shafts engineered to withstand high temperatures.

Authentic period pieces typically feature casting seam lines, hand-cut screw threads, substantial physical weight, and natural oxidisation around joints and working ends.

Position the tools on a stone or tiled hearth beside an open fireplace or log burner to add metallic warmth and historical texture against contemporary chimney breasts.

Clean brass surfaces periodically with a soft cloth and dedicated metal polish to manage surface tarnish, while keeping iron and steel parts dry to prevent corrosion.
