Large Antique Japanese Meiji Bronze Hibachi Jardiniere Mixed Metal Birds Kabuto C.1890

19th century
Description

A large and particularly decorative Japanese Meiji-period bronze hibachi or brazier, dating to approximately 1880–1900, extensively decorated with applied mixed-metal bird and floral relief and unusual samurai kabuto-inspired side mounts.

Of substantial circular form, the vessel has a broad everted rim, deep cylindrical interior, rounded body and spreading pedestal foot.

The exterior is divided into a series of large shaped reserves containing finely modelled birds amongst flowering branches, pine and blossom, including pairs of perched birds and long-beaked water birds rendered in raised relief.

The applied decoration has a contrasting silver-grey tone against the warmer bronze body, creating the distinctive mixed-metal effect associated with decorative Japanese metalwork of the Meiji period. The exact composition of the contrasting metal has not been tested and is therefore conservatively described as silver-toned mixed metal rather than solid silver.

Particularly unusual are the projecting side mounts, which appear to be modelled in the form of stylised samurai kabuto helmets, complete with suspended cord and bow motifs beneath. These martial details give the vessel an additional level of interest beyond the more commonly encountered bird-and-flower decorated Meiji bronzes.

Although such vessels are frequently described today as jardinières or cachepots, the deep interior, absence of drainage and extensive darkened deposits strongly suggest that this example was originally intended as a hibachi, the traditional Japanese charcoal brazier. Similar Meiji bronze vessels are catalogued in both the hibachi and jardinière categories.

The bronze displays an attractive naturally aged surface with warmer golden-brown tones, darker patination within the recessed decoration and age-related oxidation. The interior retains substantially darker patination and deposits consistent with historic use.

Origin: Japan

Period: Meiji period (1868–1912)

Date: Circa 1880–1900

Type: Hibachi / Brazier / Jardinière / Cachepot

Material: Bronze / copper alloy with applied silver-toned mixed-metal decoration

The interior retains historic darkening and surface deposits. Minor verdigris is present in places. No obvious major structural damage is apparent from inspection of the photographs. Please examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.

A substantial and uncommon example of late-19th-century Japanese Meiji bronze metalwork, combining traditional bird-and-flower imagery, mixed-metal decoration and unusual samurai-inspired fittings.

This large Japanese Meiji period hibachi takes the form of a substantial circular bronze brazier and jardiniere, dating to approximately 1890. The vessel is cast from dark bronze with a broad everted rim, a deep cylindrical interior, a rounded body, and a spreading pedestal foot. The exterior presents applied silver-toned mixed-metal decoration set within large shaped reserves, featuring finely modelled birds, flowering branches, pine, and blossom. Projecting from either side are unusual handles modelled as stylised samurai kabuto helmets complete with suspended cord and bow motifs beneath. The bronze exhibits a naturally aged surface with warmer golden-brown tones, darker patination within the recessed areas, and surface oxidation. Measuring 25 cm high and 33 cm wide, this piece functions practically in a modern home as a decorative cachepot or planter placed atop a sideboard or display table.

During the Meiji era (18681912), a hibachi was traditionally used as a charcoal brazier for space heating, warming tea water, or burning incense. High-status households often commissioned elaborate bronze versions adorned with relief carvings and decorative handles.

These vessels were typically cast from bronze using lost-wax processes, allowing for detailed surface reliefs and integrated handles. Metalworkers often applied patination, chasing, and mixed-metal accents to highlight decorative cartouches.

Authentic Meiji metalwork features cast details with hand-finished chasing, natural wear along the rim, and age-consistent dark patination or oxidisation. Look for characteristic relief panels, sculpted side handles, and casting marks on the underside.

A bronze hibachi functions well as a decorative centrepiece, a planter for greenery on a console, or an accent piece within a study setting. Its deep metallic tones complement both minimalist contemporary spaces and historic interiors.

Dust the bronze gently with a soft microfibre cloth or horsehair brush, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners that strip the historical patina. If using as a planter, insert a removable liner to prevent water contact and internal corrosion.
