Walnut & Burr Walnut

Walnut is a hard, dense, tight- grained wood that polishes to a very smooth finish. It is a popular and attractive wood whose colour ranges from near white in the sapwood to a dark hew in the heartwood. When dried in a kiln, walnut wood tends to develop a dull brown colour, but when air-dried, it can become a rich purplish-brown. Because of its colour, hardness and grain, it is a prized furniture and carving wood. Walnut veneer was highly priced, and the cost would reflect the 'fanciness' of the veneer – the more decorative, the more expensive and desirable.

Burr walnut refers to the swirling figure present in nearly all walnut when cut and polished, and especially in the wood taken from the base of the tree where it joins the roots. However, the true burr is a rare growth on the tree where hundreds of tiny branches have started to grow. Burr walnut produces some of the most complex and beautiful figuring you can find.

Walnut "burrs" were often used to make fabulous furniture. Veneer sliced from walnut burl is one of the most valuable and highly prized by cabinet makers and prestige car manufacturers, and is also a favourite material for shotgun stocks.

This Victorian twin pedestal desk originates from around 1900, rendered in warm brown burr walnut with a dark green leather writing surface inset into the rectangular top. The structure consists of three frieze drawers above two pedestals holding three graduated drawers each, all equipped with brass swan-neck drop handles and backplates. Additional visible elements include crossbanded drawer borders, a key with a green tassel hanging from the central lock, and plinth bases. The furniture measures 80 cm high, 157 cm wide, and 95 cm deep. Positioned in a study, home office, or gentleman's library, the table serves as a functional workspace for writing or computing. The finished back allows the piece to stand away from walls in the centre of a room, providing all-round access. The durable wood grain and traditional hardware suit period-style interiors or executive office settings where classic writing furniture is required.

Victorian pedestal desks are substantial writing tables featuring two vertical drawer units (pedestals) supporting a wide tabletop, often fitted with decorative veneers such as burr walnut, crossbanded edges, and a leather inset writing surface.

Desks from this period typically feature high-grade solid woods like oak or mahogany for the internal carcass, topped with fine figure veneers such as burr walnut, alongside cast brass hardware and gold-tooled leather writing tops.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer boxes, original brass drop or swan-neck handles, consistent historical wear along the plinth base, and natural age patina on the veneer.

Position the desk centrally in a home office or library to serve as an anchor piece, pairing it with modern lighting or a minimalist leather office chair to contrast traditional woodwork with contemporary elements.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply high-quality beeswax polish sparingly along the grain to nourish the wood; keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to protect the delicate veneer and leather.
