Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Deep relief carving with punchwork ground: late nineteenth-century French cabinet making.
Prominent medullary rays in the oak: quarter-sawn timber selected for decorative figure.
Fine vertical shrinkage checks in the turned feet: natural seasoning of solid oak.
Architectural cresting with classical urn finials: characteristic French Henri II revival taste.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

FAQs

Originating in France during the late nineteenth century, Henri II revival style draws inspiration from French Renaissance architecture, characterised by structural proportions, carved relief woodwork, turnings, and classical motifs.

These beds were typically crafted from solid native hardwoods such as French oak or walnut, featuring traditional mortise and tenon joinery alongside hand-carved decorative panels.

Authentic late nineteenth-century pieces display original hand-planed surfaces, natural patina within recessed carvings, historical joinery methods, and proportions sized to traditional French bedding frames.

Balance the substantial visual weight and intricate woodwork of the bed frame by pairing it with neutral linen bedding, minimal contemporary lighting, and plain plastered walls.

Keep solid oak furniture away from direct heat sources and bright sunlight to prevent timber movement, dusting regularly with a dry cloth and applying natural beeswax periodically to protect the finish.
