Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Austrian framer label of C. Bühlmayer: Vienna court supplier operating under Austro-Hungarian k.u.k. royal warrant.
Solid hardwood panel support: traditional European cabinet painting technique of the era.
Fine hairline surface craquelure: natural drying and shrinkage of the oil paint layers.
Moulded composition ornament on softwood frame: standard framing method of the late 19th century.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century oil painting on board depicts a restful woodland landscape scene with mature trees, a woodland pathway, a waterfall, a lake in the foreground, and distant mountains under a pink and blue sunset sky. The unsigned artwork is housed in its original nineteenth-century gilt wood frame, which is decorated with egg-and-dart moulding along the inner and outer borders and finished in pale gold tones. The painting and frame display a warm palette of green, brown, and gold, and both remain in good condition with minor signs of age visible on the timber surfaces. The piece measures Width 47 cm by Height 36.3 cm. Positioned in an English Country House style interior, this landscape fits naturally in a traditional reception room, hallway, or study. It is well suited for hanging above the mantelpiece or on a panelled wall to add a traditional focal point to a room today.

FAQs

Nineteenth-century landscape art focused on naturalistic depictions of countryside, forest, and atmospheric lighting, heavily influenced by Romanticism and natural realism movements.

Artists frequently used oil pigments mixed with drying oils painted directly onto wooden boards or canvas, housed within gilded wood and plaster mouldings.

Authentic period works exhibit fine craquelure across the paint surface, historic darkening of varnish, natural timber oxidation on the reverse panel, and period-correct frame construction.

Position the framed artwork above a mantelpiece or console table to contrast traditional gilded textures against modern neutral or dark-toned wall surfaces.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, excess humidity, and fluctuating heat sources, dusting the frame and surface gently with a soft dry brush.
