A Fine Oil Painting By James Mallard Bromley, Signed "Woodlands With Children Gathering Firewood'

£495    $661    €578
A charming oil painting by James Mallard Bromley (British artist born 1858), Signed ''John Bromley''. The painting is also signed on the reverse of the canvas. It depicts a mother and two children gathering firewood in woodland.

Bromley studied under his father, the artist William Bromley (1816-1890), whose own grandfather, also William Bromley (1769-1842), had been a successful engraver, whilst two of Bromley''s siblings, Valentine Walter Bromley (1848-1877) and William John Bromley (1858-1939), also went on to become artists. Bromley moved to St Ives in 1897, and is best known for his paintings depicting life in the local fishing towns. He exhibited widely, including sixteen works at the Royal Academy, ninety-two works at the Society of British Artists, ten at the Royal Institute, previously the ''New Watercolour Society'', and two at the Grosvenor Gallery. The painting measures 31cm x 26cm and is in very good condition.
