William H Myers 1917 Signed Original Early 20th Century Antique Oil Painting Cattle in Woodland British Landscape

1900 - 1920
Description

Type of artwork: Original Oil Paintings

Surface: Canvas

Artist and signature: William H Myers 1890-1924

Approximate age of artwork: Dated 1917

Depiction or Location: Cattle in a Woodland Landscape

Is the artwork Framed or Mounted: Unframed but is ready to hang.

Condition report: The painting is in fair antique condition overall, with clear age-related wear consistent with an oil on canvas dated 1917. There is widespread craquelure and surface cracking, particularly across the darker woodland areas, together with scattered abrasions, small losses and general surface wear. The canvas shows age-related discolouration and there are visible marks and staining to the reverse. The stretcher and canvas edges also show wear, with some fraying and old fixing marks around the perimeter.

Despite this, the composition remains strong and highly atmospheric, with the cattle, trees and shafts of light still clearly legible. The painting is offered unframed and as found, and would benefit from professional conservation/cleaning if desired. Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.

Approximate Size of the Painting is approx. 76 x 51 cm

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early 20th-century British landscape art often blended traditional naturalism with impressionistic brushwork, focusing on rural working scenes, woodland views, and agricultural life during a period of rapid industrial change.

Artists during this period typically applied hand-mixed or tubed oil pigments onto stretched woven canvas or timber panels, secured using wooden stretcher frames.

Authentic period works display natural age-related craquelure, timber stretcher oxidisation, artist signatures consistent with period records, and woven canvas backing showing gentle discolouration.

Position the painting as a focal point above a mantelpiece, console table, or amidst a contemporary gallery wall to create a striking contrast between historical subject matter and modern decor.

Keep the canvas away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent warping, dust softly using a dry brush, and avoid applying commercial cleaning chemicals.
