Fine Pair of Japanese Inlaid Bronze Vases

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine pair of Japanese inlaid bronze vases depicting cockerels perched in flowering prunus trees. The pair date to the Meiji period and are fantastic quality, of very solid form and delicately inlaid with metals of four varying colours. The symbolism of the long-tailed cockerel in the flowering prunus tree is a very important one in Japanese art and representing courage, renewal, the triumph of light over darkness, and the welcoming of a prosperous new beginning. The pair are both signed on the side by the artist Shugyoku with a secondary mark on the base which is most likely to represent the foundry. The pair are in good condition with the odd mark to surface from handling and do retain the original wood stands. These vases are fine examples of Japanese metal work with a beautiful simple elegant form. C.1900.

Engraved square seal on the base: workshop or foundry mark.
Soft surface spotting and mellow patina: natural aging of unlacquered metal.
Turned hardwood stands: edge wear consistent with period show.

This pair of Japanese decorative vases belongs to the Meiji period, originating around 1900. The items take a solid baluster form in golden bronze with mixed metal inlays, and each stands upon a dark carved wooden base. The visual surface shows detailed decorations of cockerels perched on flowering prunus tree branches, using metals of four varying colours, alongside artist signatures on the side and a secondary mark on the base. The visible construction includes narrow flared necks, rounded shoulders, and raised circular wooden stands with stepped mouldings and slight surface marks from handling. Each vase measures 21 cm high, 10 cm wide, and 10 cm deep. These objects suit display on a mantelpiece in a gentleman's library or a living room today.

During the Meiji period (18681912), Japanese metalworkers adapted traditional sword-fitting techniques to produce decorative bronze objects featuring detailed mixed-metal inlays tailored for domestic and export markets.

These vessels typically consist of cast bronze or brass, embellished with soft metal inlays such as copper, silver, gold, and shakudo to create detailed figurative or botanical designs.

Authentic pieces feature multi-metal inlay work, cast weight, finely chiselled surface details, artist signatures on the base or body, and age-consistent patination.

Positioning a pair on a sideboard or mantelpiece provides visual balance, where the metallic tones contrast effectively against neutral backdrops and minimalist furniture.

Dust gently with a dry, soft, lint-free cloth and avoid liquid polishes or chemical cleansers, which can strip away original surface patination and damage delicate metal inlays.
