This late eighteenth-century Louis XVI commode is constructed from warm brown figured mahogany with oak-lined drawers and a shaped dark marble top. The piece exhibits three long drawers, each fitted with original brass swing handles, keyholes, and locks, alongside delicate brass stringing and mouldings that frame the drawer fronts. Dark diamond marquetry highlights the upper corners, complemented by fluted tapered legs terminating in brass-mounted turned feet. Measuring 84.5 cm high, 114 cm wide, and 57 cm deep, the commode provides practical storage surface space for a hallway, bedroom, or living area. Its formal French layout and classic proportions suit traditional and transitional interiors alike, functioning as a standalone storage cabinet or display surface for lamps and decorative objects.

The Louis XVI style emerged in France during the late eighteenth century as a return to Neoclassical principles. Characterised by straight lines, geometric symmetry, tapered fluted legs, and classical motifs, it replaced the elaborate curves of the preceding Rococo era.

French commodes from this era typically feature native or imported hardwood frames finished with fine timber veneers such as walnut, mahogany, or kingwood. Tops are commonly fitted with carved marble slabs, complemented by chased brass or bronze mounts and handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction, hand-sawn back panels, and irregular hand-forged nails or screws. The marble tops often retain original chiseled marks on the underside and fit precisely over the wooden carcass.

A Neoclassical commode functions as a focal point in contemporary entryways, living rooms, or bedrooms. Pairing its structured lines with modern abstract artwork, contemporary table lamps, or minimal decorative objects creates a balanced mix of historical and modern design.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft cloth and apply beeswax periodically in the direction of the grain. Protect the marble top from acidic liquids and spills, cleaning it using only pH-neutral stone cleaners to prevent etching or staining.
