This Georgian oak dresser base dates from the eighteenth century, specifically around 1790. The piece is constructed from oak with a warm brown timber colour, complemented by brass hardware. The structure features a long, rectangular two-plank top with a simple moulded edge, positioned above a four-drawer arrangement comprising two short drawers and two long drawers. The drawer fronts include cockbeaded edges and original brass swan-neck handles with keyholes between them. A decorative scalloped apron sits below the drawers. The base is supported by straight square oak stiles at the front and rear, resting on a floor. Visible details include patched repairs toward the rear corners of the top and areas of wear. Measuring 82.5 cm high, 244 cm wide, and 51 cm deep, this unusually long dresser base works well in a hallway, dining room, or living room as a sideboard or console table. The flat top surface provides display space for lamps, books, or decorative objects, while the drawers offer storage for household items.

Originating in late 17th and 18th-century Britain, the dresser base evolved from simple trestle boards into fixed storage units designed for dining rooms and kitchens. During the Georgian era, regional craftsmen produced these pieces using native timbers like oak, serving both functional food preparation and display purposes.

Georgian oak dressers were built using hand-planed native oak, mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs, and hand-dovetailed drawer linings. The hardware typically comprised cast brass swan-neck handles and iron keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of hand-tooling, such as pit-saw marks on the back panels and uneven drawer construction. Shrinkage gaps along solid wood tops, naturally oxidized timber tone, and genuine wear around handle drop points also indicate period authenticity.

A long dresser base serves effectively in a large hallway, dining room, or behind a deep sofa. Modern styling often involves pairing the antique wood surface with contemporary artwork, large table lamps, or minimal ceramic vessels to balance historic and modern elements.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year along the grain. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting.
