This Victorian Gothic Revival fireplace fender dates to 1850. Constructed from cast iron, brass, and polychrome paint, the exterior displays a multicolour palette with gilded gold accents, green foliage, and a dark brown base moulding. The piece incorporates a central grotesque mask, winged figures, and polychromed phoenix and fish motifs within sculpted relief scrollwork. Turned corner posts support a curved white brass rail finished with spherical finials. The hardware includes polished and lacquered brass elements on the upper corners. Measuring 43 cm high, 152 cm wide, and 44 cm deep externally, with interior dimensions of 137 cm long and 36.5 cm deep, the item is designed for placement on a fireplace hearth. It functions as a physical barrier around an active or decorative fireplace opening while framing the hearth area in a living room, study, or parlour setting.

FAQs

A Victorian fireplace fender is a low rail or border positioned around the hearth. Its primary purpose was to prevent hot embers and ash from rolling onto carpets or floorboards while providing a decorative frame for the fireplace.

Victorian fenders were commonly cast from iron or brass, featuring heavy moulded bases for stability. Polychrome examples were decorated with painted pigments and gilding applied to highlighted relief sections such as foliage, figures, or masks.

Authentic nineteenth-century fenders display substantial weight due to cast metal construction, along with subtle casting seams and hand-applied painted finishes. Genuine pieces often show natural age wear, mild oxidisation on metal surfaces, and minor craquelure within the polychrome paint layer.

Place the fender directly on the hearth before an existing fireplace opening to frame the area. It pairs effectively with traditional stone mantels or can be used as a contrasting architectural element within contemporary living spaces.

Dust the fender regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or soft-bristled brush. Avoid using liquid cleaners, abrasive polishes, or chemical solvents, as these can strip or damage historical paintwork and gilded accents.
