This late 19th-century Victorian bedstead comes in a brass and iron construction with a gold finish, combining a tall arched headboard and footboard with vertical spindles, cast scrollwork, and a central foliate cartouche. The metal displays an aged patina from gentle cleaning, and the footboard rests on small square-shaped feet with decorative lower corner mounts. It measures 120 cm high, 137 cm wide, and 198 cm deep, accommodating a standard mattress. Suitable as a bedroom centrepiece, the bed provides a stable sleeping platform within a traditional domestic setting. The restoration work maintains the historical integrity of the piece while ensuring functional durability for daily use.

FAQs

Late 19th-century brass bedsteads are constructed with hollow brass tubing or cast metal components, featuring decorative openwork panels, scrollwork, radiating spindles, and arched frames.

These pieces were typically made using cast iron for the load-bearing side rails combined with brass tubing and cast brass or iron fittings for the headboard and footboard.

Authentic pieces feature cast iron side rails with drop-in corner joints, cast maker marks or registration numbers, and natural age-related tarnishing across the brass surface.

A brass bedstead can be paired with modern neutral linen bedding, timber side tables, and understated wall paint to balance the metallic detail with modern minimalist elements.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid using harsh abrasive chemical polishes that can remove original surface patinas or protective lacquers.
