This pair of Victorian large single size bedsteads, dating from 1870, originates from the English maker Hoskins & Sewell. Constructed from brass and iron, the frames display an original patina finish in a warm brass tone. Distinctive design details visible on the structures include decorative ball finials atop the posts, heavily turned corner posts with spherical ornamental elements, and structured rows of vertical tubular spindles across both head and footboards. Each bed frame is mounted on small metal castors. The pieces measure 152 cm high, 107 cm wide, and 198 cm deep, accommodating standard 3ft6 by 6ft3 mattresses. Suitable for modern bedroom settings, these twin beds bring traditional character to a guest bedroom or a master suite. The robust metal construction and classic Victorian styling integrate easily into period homes or country house schemes, offering practical sleeping arrangements whilst retaining their antique aesthetic.

During the late 19th century, brass bedsteads became prominent due to sanitary movements and manufacturing advances mastered by makers such as Hoskins & Sewell. They feature tubular brass constructions fitted over iron support frames.

These frames were manufactured using seamless brass tubing fitted over structural iron core rods, linked with heavy cast-iron corner joints and decorative brass finials.

Authentic pieces by Hoskins & Sewell usually carry stamped metal plaques or impressed maker marks on the iron side rails or dovetail cast-iron joint sockets.

Pairing brass bedsteads with crisp white bed linen and neutral wall tones creates a contrast that highlights the warm metallic finish in guest bedrooms or master suites.

Clean the metal using a soft microfibre cloth and gentle polish formulated for unlacquered brass, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners that strip aged patina.
