This late Victorian two-seater settee dates from circa 1880 and has a sculptural kidney shape. The ebonised wood frame features a curved spindle backrest and turned fluted legs ending in original brass castors. Cream calico fabric covers the padded seat and curved back, finished with fine traditional stitched edge work and small metal tacks along the borders. The piece is 73 cm high, 140 cm wide, and 70 cm deep, with a seat height of 40 cm. Suitable for placement in a drawing room, bedroom, or reading nook, the settee provides compact seating while maintaining its historical character. The black finish on the timber contrasts with the neutral upholstery. Buyers may keep the current calico cover or arrange for custom re-upholstery to match an existing interior scheme.

Victorian ebonised seating became popular in the mid-to-late nineteenth century, influenced by the Aesthetic Movement and Anglo-Japanese taste. Black-stained hardwood was polished to resemble expensive ebony timber, often paired with spindle framework and curved contours suitable for formal drawing rooms.

Frames were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as beech, walnut, or birch, which were dyed or stained dark to create an ebonised finish. Upholstery bases utilised natural materials including horsehair stuffing, steel coil springs, jute webbing, and brass castors.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-turned spindles, hand-cast brass castors with original steel screws, and natural wear to the dark ebonised finish revealing lighter timber beneath. Construction features traditional mortise and tenon joinery rather than modern fasteners.

Position the settee in an entryway, bay window, or at the foot of a bed to highlight its swept silhouette. Pairing dark ebonised timber with neutral linen or textured upholstery creates visual contrast in minimalist and contemporary spaces.

Dust ebonised woodwork regularly using a dry microfibre cloth. Avoid harsh chemical polishes or water-based cleaners; apply a small amount of dark beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to maintain the luster and protect the timber.
