Superb Quality Mid 19th Century Camphor Wood Military Campaign Chest of Drawers

19th century
Description

A Superb Quality Mid 19th Century Camphor Wood Military Campaign Chest, Of Traditional Two Part Construction, Having Wonderfully Figured Timbers Throughout, Original Brass Bound Decoration, Two Short And Three Long Drawers, All Retaining Their Original Flush Fitting Brass Handles, The Locks Stamped "Hobbs & Co, London", Raised On Original Turned Feet.

This is a particularly good quality example of a military campaign chest, with lovely rich colour and figuring to the camphor wood throughout. The brass fittings provide an attractive contrast to the timber, whilst the practical two part construction was originally designed to allow the chest to be easily transported during military campaigns.

As the name suggests, military campaign chests were originally made for use by senior members of the armed forces, often having to be transported from one location to another at relatively short notice. Their design therefore incorporated a number of practical features, including the two part construction for ease of movement, flush fitting brass handles to prevent snagging during transportation, and brass bound corners and edges to protect the chest from the inevitable knocks and bumps associated with military life.

The chest retains an extremely rich colour and surface throughout, with the usual old marks, scuffs and minor imperfections associated with age and use, all blending in nicely. It's worth noting as well that this is at the very top end of the quality scale in terms of its construction and the materials used, with the original brass fittings and Hobbs & Co locks further emphasising the quality of the piece.

It has been carefully attended to in our workshops by our skilled traditional antique furniture restorers, receiving an appropriate natural wax polish, and is now ready to place in the home.

This mid-nineteenth century campaign chest of drawers follows the Victorian military style, constructed from camphor wood with a warm brown colour and brass hardware. The piece has a traditional two-part stacking configuration featuring two short upper drawers above three long drawers, all fitted with original flush brass handles and corner straps, and stands on original turned bun feet. The timber displays rich figuring and grain patterns throughout, contrasted by the polished brass mounts and Hobbs & Co London stamped locks, alongside scattered old marks and minor surface scuffs from age and use. The chest measures 101.5 cm high, 99 cm wide, and 45 cm deep. Suitable for use in a gentleman's library, study, or bedroom, this chest provides functional storage space while adding traditional character to an interior. The modular construction allows the top and bottom sections to separate, reflecting its historical design for transport during military campaigns. The surfaces are finished with a natural wax polish applied during workshop restoration, preparing the item for placement in a contemporary home.

A military campaign chest is a modular piece of furniture designed specifically for British armed forces officers to transport during military expeditions overseas throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.

These chests were primarily crafted from resilient hardwoods such as camphor wood, teak, or mahogany, featuring protective flush-mounted brass corner straps and brass handles to withstand transport.

Authentic period examples feature a two-part splitting structure, flush recessed brass fittings, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and occasionally a distinct aromatic aroma if constructed from camphor wood.

A campaign chest functions effectively as functional storage in a bedroom, living space, or home office, paired alongside modern lighting, neutral linen textiles, and structured architectural elements.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish annually along the wood grain, while keeping brass fittings clean with a non-abrasive cloth.
