Antique Bronze Cased Model Colubrina Da Fortezza Cannon 19th Century

19th century
For Sale by Regent Antiques
Description

This is a superb decorative glass-cased bronze model of the Colubrina da Fortezza cannon, late 19th century in date.

It features a 25 cm long brass barrel mounted on a two-wheeled carriage on an oak base with a bronze Colubrina da Fortezza plaque.

The introduction of the muzzle-loading cannon meant the end of traditional methods of warfare and ancient fortifications. In the Battle of Castillon, in 1453, the last clash of the Hundred Years' War, the French defeated the English, thanks to cannons and bombards that managed to hit the archers long before they could get within a useful distance to use their bows.

This nineteenth-century scale model of a Colubrina da Fortezza cannon rests on an oak base inside a clear glass display case. The miniature artillery piece displays a cast bronze barrel, spoked wooden wheels with silver-toned metal fittings and rivets, and a complex metal carriage mechanism. The entire assembly sits protected under its glass cover, measuring 17 cm high, 40 cm wide, and 25 cm deep. Display this decorative model on an office desk or within a gentleman's library setting to add historical character to a workspace. The piece suits collectors of military history and historical scale models, offering a tangible glimpse into nineteenth-century engineering and ordnance design without occupying excessive space in a room.

A fortress culverin, or Colubrina da Fortezza, refers to a long-barrelled artillery piece designed for defensive installations, with miniature scale models traditionally crafted for military demonstration, apprenticeships, or display.

Models from this period typically featured cast bronze or brass barrels mounted on wooden carriages reinforced with iron straps, rivets, and functional spoked wheels.

Authentic period models display age-appropriate patination on metal components, precise period joinery on the carriage, and hand-fitted rivets rather than contemporary machine screws or modern solder.

A cased model cannon functions well as a focal object on a dark timber desk, within a bookshelf alcove, or positioned on a mantelpiece alongside leather-bound books and brass instruments.

Keep the exterior glass enclosure clean using a dry microfibre cloth, avoid harsh polishes on the bronze barrel to preserve its natural patina, and store the item away from direct heat sources.
