Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1850s:
Bold carved Rococo revival cresting with cabochon: mid-19th-century grand dining room furniture.
Flame mahogany veneers across curved doors: deep, warm aged shellac polish.
Applied foliate carving on the pilasters: crisp hand carving before machine routing.
Fine veneer shrinkage on the curved doors: natural wood movement over decades.
Moulded serpentine breakfront top: generous proportions suited to Victorian country house dining.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian sideboard dates from 1850 and is formed from dark brown mahogany with glass. The piece is styled with an arched mirror back, a serpentine front with a central drawer, flanked bowed carved doors, carved pilasters, and an open central bay resting on a plinth base. Elaborate scroll carvings adorn the crest of the mirror frame and the structural uprights. The large sideboard measures 205 cm high, 221.5 cm wide, and 68 cm deep, providing substantial storage and display space. It suits placement in a dining room, hallway, or grand reception area to serve as a traditional focal point while accommodating serving ware, linens, or decorative objects.

FAQs

Developed during the nineteenth century, a mirror back sideboard is a dining room storage unit featuring lower cabinetry topped with an integrated decorative mirror frame to reflect light and display tableware.

Craftsmen typically utilised solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, frequently incorporating flame timber veneers, hand-carved scrollwork, and silvered glass mirror plates.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, original mirror back plates showing subtle foxing, a rich natural patina, and period-accurate hand-carved decorative mouldings or pilasters.

Position the piece in a spacious hallway or grand dining room, pairing its rich wood tones with neutral wall palettes, modern art, or understated ceramics to balance its ornate silhouette.

Regularly dust the wooden surfaces with a soft dry cloth and apply beeswax polish annually along the grain, while cleaning the mirror plate with a mild glass cleaner applied directly to a microfibre cloth.
