Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Austrian nineteenth-century single toleware bedstead exemplifies nineteenth-century Austrian style, constructed from sheet metal, iron, and brass with an olive green and gold finish. The head and foot panels show hand-painted floral motifs inside gilded border lineations, complemented by brass top rails, spherical finials, and turned feet. The surfaces show gentle wear preserved through cleaning and waxing, maintaining the original hand-painted decoration and patina. Measuring 144 cm high, 90 cm wide, and 193 cm deep, this bed accommodates a standard single mattress. Suitable for use in a bedroom, guest room, or period interior, the design integrates well into traditional country house schemes. The robust metal frame and decorative panels provide both structural support and visual interest, functioning as a practical sleeping platform while serving as a decorative focal point in a domestic setting.

FAQs

A toleware bedstead is a bed frame constructed from painted, lacquered, or enamelled sheet metal, often embellished with brass fittings and decorative artwork produced during the 19th century.

These pieces are predominantly crafted from rolled sheet iron or tin plate, supported by iron tubing, embellished with brass rails and finials, and finished with oil-based paints.

Authentic period toleware displays age-appropriate surface craquelure, natural paint loss around edges, oxidisation on brass components, and hand-painted polychrome decoration rather than modern stencilling.

Pair the detailed painted metal panels with crisp, neutral linen bedding and simple timber side tables to allow the decorative paintwork and brass detailing to serve as the focal point.

Dust the surface lightly with a dry microfibre cloth, avoid water and chemical detergents, and ensure the piece is kept in a climate-controlled room to prevent rust formation under the paint layer.
