FAQs

Bronze cherub and putti groups became widespread in European decorative arts during the Baroque and Rococo periods, remaining popular throughout nineteenth-century France. Representing classical and mythological themes, these cast metal sculptures were primarily designed as mantelpiece garnitures, desk ornaments, and interior display pieces.

Most antique bronze figural groups were produced using the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand-casting methods. Following the casting process, craftsmen hand-chased the surface details into the alloy and applied chemical patination to establish deep tones before securing the work onto a stone or timber base.

Authentic antique bronze sculptures display crisp hand-chased details in areas such as hair and drapery, alongside natural patination wear on raised edges. Additional indicators include period-appropriate assembly threading beneath the plinth and documented foundry marks or signatures.

A bronze figural sculpture operates as a textural focal point when placed on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or open bookcase shelf. Displaying dark patinated bronze against neutral plaster walls or minimalist timber furniture creates effective visual contrast.

Dust the bronze surface regularly using a soft, dry lint-free cloth or a delicate brush. Avoid water, abrasive pastes, or chemical polishes, as these strip original patination; a light application of microcrystalline wax can be applied periodically to guard the metal against oxidisation.
