Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Warm brown patina rubbed lighter on raised points: handling over many decades.
Careful hand chasing in the vine leaves and drapery: nineteenth-century French foundry finishing.
Tiered plinth of shaped green and red marbles: typical French salon mount.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This nineteenth-century French bronze sculpture depicts a seated bacchante holding a tambourine alongside a child, presented in the style of Clodion. Cast in a dark bronze finish, the sculptural group captures a classical narrative scene with draped drapery and intricate figures. The composition rests upon a mottled green and black marble plinth, which is further supported by a layered reddish-brown marble and dark wood base with stepped mouldings. The item measures 24 cm high, 17 cm wide and 17 cm deep. Placed on a mantelpiece or side table within a French chateau or classical interior scheme, this decorative bronze group brings historical character to a living room, study or hallway. The rich brown patina of the metal contrasts with the polished green and red tones of the layered stone base, creating a distinct visual focal point. Displaying the traditional craftsmanship of the period, the piece integrates well into both traditional and eclectic settings as a tabletop or shelf display.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a dry, soft-bristle brush, avoiding liquid polishes or chemical cleansers, and applying microcrystalline wax lightly to protect the original patina.

Position the sculpture on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or desk where directional lighting highlights the relief work and dark bronze patina against neutral backdrops.

Authentic period bronzes exhibit crisp hand-chased surface work, natural wear in high-relief areas, original threaded mounting rod assemblies, and substantial weight appropriate to solid metal casting.

These sculptures were cast using lost-wax or sand-casting methods, after which craftsmen chased the cold metal by hand before mounting the finished bronze onto marble plinths.

Nineteenth-century French bronzes are defined by classical subject matter, high precision in casting detail, and hand-applied patinas created during the expansion of Parisian foundries.
