Description

What is particularly attractive about this charming vanity-bag is the wool quality, soft, silky and lustrous, sheared from mountain sheep once a year and used in the very best of Baluch weaving. The main border depicts a continuous flower and vine pattern on a glowing madder-red background.

Made circa 1880, the knotted-pile face of the bag is in excellent condition although the plain-weave back has had some hard wear with several small areas of damage. Nevertheless, this shows the bag was once used and was a prized possession among the Baluchis.

Size: 34 x 30cm (13" x 12").

Baluch tribal bags were traditionally woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic groups inhabiting the border regions of Persia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, utilising geometric motifs and deep colour palettes rooted in regional heritage.

These pieces are typically constructed using hand-spun wool for both the pile and foundation, often incorporating natural dyes derived from local plants, roots, and minerals to achieve rich reds, deep indigos, and dark browns.

Authenticity is identified through the presence of hand-spun wool, traditional asymmetrical knotting, natural dye variations, and authentic wear patterns characteristic of genuine tribal utilitarian items.

Such pieces can be displayed flat as miniature wall art, mounted in shadow boxes, or placed on accent surfaces to introduce tactile warmth, historical depth, and rich colour into a contemporary space.

Preservation involves keeping the item out of direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, regular gentle vacuuming through a mesh screen to remove dust, and maintaining stable indoor humidity levels.
