A salt bag is a traditional woven utility pouch produced by nomadic and settled tribal groups in the Caucasus region, historically used to carry and store rock salt for livestock.

These items are generally constructed using hand-spun wool for both the flat-woven kilim body and the warp-weft structure, often featuring natural plant and insect-derived dyes.

Authentic pieces display hand-spun wool irregularities, natural dye variations, traditional tribal motifs specific to regions like the Caucasus, and genuine age-related wear.

Such pieces can be framed as wall art, mounted on specialist fabric backings, or displayed as flat textile accents to introduce texture, colour, and historical depth to a room.

Preservation requires avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, keeping the wool clean from pests using gentle vacuuming through a mesh screen, and maintaining stable humidity levels.
